Galeries Lafayette is one of the world’s best-known department stores offering the very best in contemporary fashion, beauty, home, food and luxury goods, all under one roof. Since our opening in the 19th century in Paris, our grandiose stores have been a unique showcase for the latest trends. Galeries Lafayette is now a true (fashion) destination: it is the second most visited monument in Paris after the Eiffel Tower.
It all started in
When two cousins, Théophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn decided to open a novelty store in the corner of rue Lafayette and rue de la Chaussée d’Antin. Its location turned out to be ideal: close to the Opera Garnier and the Grand Boulevard. The store also benefited from its proximity to the Saint Lazare train station and the daily crowds that came to Paris to shop.

In
the “luxury bazaar” dreamed of by Théophile Bader was inaugurated. Galeries Lafayette Haussmann now includes several stores, following the purchase of the entire building at 1, rue La Fayette and, in 1903, the buildings at 38, 40 and 42, boulevard Haussmann, as well as 15, rue de la Chaussée d'Antin. The small novelty store has become a department store with spectacular architecture, a magnificent dome, and a constantly renewed offering.
